Click to Meet® Increases Productivity and Saves Costs in Benelux
When Dutch-based Goffin Meyvis, a leading distributor of analytical and medical systems, instruments and equipment, wanted to save time and money in travel time, they knew that videoconferencing was the answer. Their sales team of over 100 travel throughout Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg, spending much of their precious time on the road getting to sales meetings. This wasted time spent traveling could be turned into valuable quality time with customers by using visual communications.
The company had tried several phone-line based videoconferencing solutions, but found them prohibitively expensive. Goffin Meyvis’ IT Manager, Bart van Gessel, researched Microsoft’s® Live Communication Server, and installed it for testing. Bart soon discovered that this Real Time Collaboration solution supported point-to-point videoconferencing only and not multiparty videoconferencing. This was a vital requirement for the company. |

Convinced that multiparty videoconferencing was the answer to the company’s needs, Bart made inquiries in a Microsoft LCS user forum. “A user posted a response to my query and told me that RADVISION was the address for desktop multiparty videoconferencing. I contacted their local partner, XperTeam ( info@xperteam.nl), and they had us online in just a few weeks.”
According to Marcel Groen, Director at XperTeam, the deployment went very smoothly. “We were able to guide the company through the installation and initial set-up remotely,” said Marcel. “The fact that the Goffin Meyvis team had no previous expertise in videoconferencing wasn’t an obstacle at all. That’s how intuitive and easy-to-use Click to Meet® is, and why we value the solution so highly.”
Goffin Meyvis completed the purchase and installation of a Click to Meet desktop conferencing system at the end of 2005, and so far users are very satisfied. Employees connect via VPN to the company’s network and hold sales meetings and consultations with each other and with their customers via their desktop PCs and laptops – from wherever their work takes them. This feature-rich solution enables multiparty videoconferencing with application sharing capabilities, delivering real added value since the sales team can discuss and collaborate on the latest documents and presentations.
Most importantly, Goffin Meyvis already sees bottom line results. “We are surprised by the number of salespeople that want to get online at the same time and use the new videoconferencing solution,” says van Gessel. “Fortunately this is a highly scalable solution that can grow together with our company’s needs”.

Reducing Call Setup Time in 3G Mobile Video Telephony
RADVISION is an active member of the ITU-T Study Group 16. This study group focuses on rich multimedia telephony protocols including H.323, H.324, and H.248 (MEGACO). Since its establishment, RADVISION has contributed significantly in developing standards, including dedicating employees solely to participation in the relevant standard bodies. This activity evolved with customer needs and requirements in mind.
The key for assuring interoperability between different handsets and different network equipment implementations is compliance to a common accepted standard. On a practical level, most of the technical additions to 3G-324M can only be made through standardization work in ITU-T and through the 3GPP.
RADVISION is proud to be the main contributor to H.324, which is used for mobile video telephony, as it evolved over the past few years, and has contributed to changes that affect a wide range of issues. In this issue, we will review recent contributions to 3G call setup time, a key factor in achieving faster connectivity and improving the user experience.
The Challenge
The H.324 standard was originally intended for use on PSTN networks where modem negotiation takes approximately 15 seconds. As a result, the initial standard overlooked the time required to negotiate media channels and connect a call. Lengthy call setup time is one of the most significant obstacles to wide-scale acceptance of mobile video telephony.
RADVISION Develops a Solution
RADVISION identified this “soft spot” in the standard and devised a simple, straightforward and backward-interoperable solution that also allows future enhancements and can be easily implemented by any vendor. The solution is composed of two different complementary standard additions, one known as WNSRP, that together reduce call setup time to one second. The second addition is still pending by the ITU and 3GPP.
WNSRP is a windowing mechanism built as an enhancement to the NSRP protocol used in H.324. It was developed as a joint effort between Motorola and RADVISION and has been accepted by handset vendors and mobile operators as a compelling initial solution to reduce call setup time. The windowing mechanism allows the negotiation of different H.245 procedures in parallel instead of sequential negotiation, and reduces the time required to exchange the capabilities and open the channels during call setup.
Approval Status
In the summer of 2005, WNSRP was added to the H.324 standard at the ITU-T Study Group 16 meeting held in Geneva, and approved by 3GPP in September 2005. Operators around the world have mandated WNSRP for use in all new handsets. By year-end 2006, virtually all new 3G-324M devices and network equipment are expected to support WNSRP.
WNSRP has been available to RADVISION customers since May 2005. RADVISION remains active in supporting further additions to the standard and that will reduce call set up time even more.

Eye on Italy
Visual communications is well entrenched in the Italian telecommunications landscape and has been for several years. What makes the Italian market so open to change and early adoption of emerging visual communications technologies? Is it the strength of local manufacturers of enterprise and service provider endpoints, like Aethra? Or is it the proliferation of advanced media services, such as video surveillance, home care and more? Perhaps demand is being driven by one of the highest penetration rates of mobile telephony in the region. At over 27 million, there are more mobile subscribers in Italy than fixed-line subscribers. And in the 3G arena, Italy has over 3 million active users—one of the highest in Europe. Or perhaps high demand for rich, video-enabled services is due to the gregarious, animated and open nature Italians are famous for? According to Roberto Giamagli, RADVISION’s Country Manager in Italy, it is a unique combination of all of these. |

Pioneers in New Markets
“There is no question that the Italian market’s appetite for video services is due in part to operators’ aggressive marketing, like Telecom Italia. But remember, Italy was one of the first countries to offer fixed line service—when RADVISION empowered FastWeb to deploy visual communications to homes and businesses. It was a natural evolution into the mobile market, and local operators like Telecom Italia and TIM are making it happen. The enterprise market is also well positioned to adopt video-based communications. The strong infrastructure is in place, the endpoints are widely available and the cultural obstacles are minimal.”
Roberto also points out that the relatively long and successful experience Italians have with visual communications is driving very healthy demand for video services. There are many Application Service Providers (ASPs) competing in this space, and all are looking for better ways to deliver these services to operators and enterprises – rapidly and efficiently.
The Right Solutions
Roberto reports that RADVISION’s product portfolio is especially well positioned to take advantage of the numerous opportunities for global visual communication tools. The RADVISION Interactive Video Platform is ideal for operators and ASPs looking for ways to roll out revenue-generating, next-generation services. In the enterprise market, RADVISION is driving cost savings and streamlining operations. For over ten years, the Italian Ministry of Justice has been using videoconferencing to conduct hearings and proceedings, saving significant resources in travel and transporting prisoners. When the need arose to view several sites simultaneously, RADVISION was the only infrastructure equipment manufacturer with a solution that met their needs. Working closely with partners Telecom Italia and Aethra, the program now supports continuous presence. In addition, Kelyan Lab, a leading Italian ASP, partners with RADVISION to develop 3G video services for mobile operators. “We are also active in several pilot programs with several operators and partners,” says Roberto. “The use of video in internal and subscriber portals is really growing. Our team is already laying the groundwork to position further growth for RADVISION in these markets.
“Everyone knows Italians like to talk with their hands... and to do that well, you need to see and be seen. Our challenge is to identify new opportunities – where RADVISION’s seamless, cross-platform connectivity, interoperability and rapid, flexible multi-service development and deployment will set trends. When it comes to new breakthroughs in visual communications, Italy is a very exciting place to be!”

for their reliable, high-quality service, and the IP networks that are used for all advanced video applications, such as video mail and videoconferencing. Today the challenge has evolved, and is much more than just linking the IP and 3G worlds.
According to Eli Doron, the revolution began when broadband was delivered to the home and office via ADSL, cable and fiber. Being that IP was more available, less expensive and reliable, it became the foundation on which all video applications were based. “The first taste of what was to come was TV broadcasting over IP, or IPTV personalized streamed content,” explains Eli. “This worked well over asymmetric networks, like ADSL, where a high bandwidth downstream was available.”
Video telephony, or multiparty conferencing and real-time video applications, require a minimum amount of upstream bandwidth to ensure a quality video experience. Advances in codec development and implementation, such as H.264, are improving the video experience even at lower bandwidths. Today, 3G networks can already offer quality video calling with only 64 kbps upstream.
“3G gives 64 kbps upstream and on the circuit-switched side, with the QoS operators need to roll out carrier-grade services,” explains Karen. “This is enough upstream bandwidth to enable two-way video at an acceptable level of quality. The picture is small enough so that the quality perception is very good. And, of course, all 3G phones have the video capabilities built in.”
RADVISION realized that the challenge was developing and deploying a gateway between the circuit switched and IP networks. The SCOPIA™ 3G Gateway, first introduced in 2003, soon became known as the best product on the market. “Over 80 percent of the cell phone companies that operate advanced wireless networks use SCOPIA 3G gateway technology to power video services, such as videoconferencing and video mail,” says Eli. “Market leaders, like Orange, Hutchison, and Vodafone all recognized this and use our 3G solutions. And the way we see the market evolving, this is only the beginning.
A critical mass of endpoints is ready – and out there in the hands of subscribers. They are just waiting for the video services.”
The Technology to Catch Up With Demand
Developing networks, such as HSDPA, which offers higher bandwidth for downstream, and HSUPA, which will offer high bandwidth for upstream, are paving the way for a new era that will take the market to new video communications levels.
With the growing use of WCDMA in Europe and APAC, and TD-SCDMA in China, the challenge is to be able to leverage the inherent power and ease-of-use of the circuit-switch layer – while simultaneously harnessing all the video power of the IP layer. CDMA 2000 Rev A in the US, Korea, and South America, widens the challenge to provide consumer and enterprise video services over pure IP networks. And just as important – the technology has to be ready for next generation carrier networks—IMS.
“We always try to stay one-step ahead of the market, and with our Interactive Video Platform, I believe we really are in the right place at the right time,” says Eli. “The Interactive Video Platform meets all the requirements for all networks and technologies. It offers a flexible and easy-to-use layer for multiple application development, so that operators can customize and develop applications, yet is advanced enough to hide all the inherent complexities of the video environment.”
“The market has yet to determine the ‘one’ application that will conquer the 3G market,” explains Karen. “We asked ourselves what we think is a more important question in developing the Interactive Video Platform. ‘Does this application exist?’ We feel that the availability of bundled services is the key to growing the 3G customer base and increasing revenues per user. So along with enabling subscribers to download music tracks and ring tones, operators can now offer a variety of video services. These video services can be developed on one platform, which reduces CAPEX, as well as development and deployment costs. This is where we believe the market is headed.”
Investing in the Services of the Future
RADVISION already offers several off-the-shelf solutions for some of these services. Utilizing the inherent QoS and symmetrical bandwidth of the circuit switch layer, SCOPIA 3G Videoconferencing enables real-time multiparty conferencing on 3G H.324M networks. SCOPIA iCONTACT™ can leverage the power of the asymmetric elements of today’s IP networks. With the RADVISION Interactive Video Platform, these services, and others like video dating, video communities, blogs and much more will enable a smooth, profitable migration into the next stage of convergence with IMS.
IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is a generic architecture for multimedia and voice communications over IP services. Defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). IMS supports multiple access types including GSM, WCDMA, CDMA2000, WLAN, wireline broadband and other packet data applications. IMS will make Internet technologies, such as Web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging and videoconferencing available to everyone from any location, and will also allow operators to introduce new services at the top level of packet-switched networks.
RADVISION excels at supporting any network, any protocol and any device. With IMS support built into RADVISION’s developer toolkits, the RADVISION Interactive Video Platform fits extremely well into emerging IMS architecture. IMS is based on SIP for call signaling, and is currently being trialed around the world; it is expected to be widely deployed over the next several years. “We are working with the core network providers in their trials as an MGCF and MGW entity in the IMS architecture,” says Eli, “to provide connectivity between the newer packet networks to the circuit switched-based H.324M and legacy networks. Our Interactive Video Platform also offers a Media Resource Function (MRF) entity for IMS. It is our expertise in transcoding and conferencing of video services that will help us take the lead here as well.”

AT&T in New Jersey recently purchased two SCOPIA™ PathFinder™ servers completely
configured for 50 ports to provide Gateway services for their MPLS customers.

North Networks, operating a telemedicine network in eastern Canada, purchased a SCOPIA PathFinder server along with an ECS with 20 ports on a single server to allow endpoints outside their network to connect over IP. Additional purchases for distance learning are being worked on as we go to press.

SIP Java Toolkit
RADVISION released a Java version of its award-winning session initiation protocol (SIP) Toolkit. This toolkit is used for real-time communication applications, such as voice-over-IP (VoIP) and instant messaging (IM). The new Toolkit significantly shortens development cycles enabling faster time-to-market for a variety of new and innovative services.
Click To Meet®v.4.2.5
Newly released Click To Meet v.4.2.5 supports H.264 video, which enables users to experience greatly improved video quality at the same data rate, or the same quality they already experience at roughly half the data rate currently used. The benefits are more efficient use of network infrastructure, more cost effective business quality video, and more access to those participants who previously did not have enough bandwidth for video.
With the Microsoft Office Integration option, the Click to Meet plug-in for Live Meeting is now available in nine languages.
Advanced RTP Toolkit Adds SRTP Security
RADVISION’s Advanced RTP Toolkit includes a SRTP (Secure-RTP) add-on that enables customers to secure media in VoIP calls.
H.323 Firewall/NAT Traversal
RADVISION’s newest version of the H.323 Toolkit now includes an H.460 Firewall/NAT Traversal add-on. This new set of Firewall/NAT Traversal standards is currently being deployed around the world, and is a result of RADVISION’s joint standardization efforts with partners.
ECS-Enhanced Communications Server v 4.1
The upgraded version of the ECS - Enhanced Communication Server v 4.1 was recently released. It provides comprehensive, intelligent management of IP telephony and multimedia communication networks for enterprise and service provider networks. The updated version introduces support for Windows 2003.
iVIEW™ Network Manager v 2.5
iVIEW Network Manager v 2.5 for Service Providers features a SCOPIA 1000 chassis, the SS7 Signaling gateway, the ability to configure, manage and upload software versions to multiple RADVISION elements simultaneously, and central logging tools for convenient tracking of the system.
IMS SIP Toolkit
The soon to be released IMS SIP Toolkit is a powerful and highly versatile set of tools to facilitate development of IMS SIP applications while reducing development time and costs. The Toolkit includes an extensive choice of quick start sample applications that enable full user control and flexibility, a GUI test application, and detailed documentation. The IMS SIP Toolkit is fully compliant with IETF and 3GPP standards.
Media Framework
RADVISION will soon release a Media Framework, specifically designed to reduce time-to-market by linking RADVISION signaling products with the desired media codecs for integration. The Media Framework will be based on a new standard called OpenMAX.
SIP Server Platform 3.0
The SIP Server Platform v 3.0 will introduce three new modules – Accounting Collections, Advanced High Availability and Operation & Maintenance. The SIP Server platform is software framework to implement all necessary building blocks for SIP servers and supports rapid and effective SIP server application development.
Complete Media Quality Measurement in ProLab™
A Complete Media Quality measurement module will be implemented in the upcoming ProLab release. This new perceptual Video and Audio quality measure uses various metrics to intrusively analyze received video and audio streams and score perceptually relevant degradations on an MOS scale, with additional key performance indicators such as ITU J.144. |
