The Unified WNSRP-ACN Solution: Reducing 3G-324M Video Call Setup Time to a Bare Minimum

The 3G-324M standard was originally intended for use on PSTN networks, where the modem negotiation takes approximately 15 seconds. As a result, the initial standard overlooked the time required for media channel negotiation and call connection. This lengthy call setup time is seen by mobile operators as a significant barrier to the acceptance of video telephony.

Radvision has identified lengthy 3G-324M call setup time as a "soft spot" in the standard and has devised a simple and straightforward backward interoperable solution that allows future enhancement within the current standard's framework and can be easily implemented by any vendor. The solution is comprised of two different complementary standard additions known as WNSRP and ACN that, together, reduce call setup time to a single second.

An explanation and white paper on WNSRP can be found at the following link: http://www.radvision.com/ResourceLibrary/StandardsWatch/WNSRP/.

ACN (Automatic Connect Negotiation) seamlessly works with WNSRP to reduce call setup time by providing an easy-to-implement and natural mechanism for reducing call setup time with only very minor changes to existing call setup procedures. Used with WNSRP, ACN reduces the round trips required during call setup from approximately 3-5 round trips to half a round trip before starting to send media on the channels realizing a significant benefit in shorter call setup time.

ACN uses the H.245 control channel and parallelizes the various procedures that must be negotiated during call setup time instead of running them sequentially without losing any of the advantages inherent to H.245 as a signaling protocol and without adding complexity to 3G-324M. This solution aligns itself with the current standard’s structure enhancing the ability of developers to easily implement this new feature and thus reduces the time to market of standardized interoperable solutions for call setup time. This elegant and simple solution requires minimal negotiation and signaling and is significantly superior to other pending proposals and techniques. Adding ACN as a new Annex to the H.324 standard will enable faster call setup procedures for all.
